After spending quite some time in Indonesia I have been lucky enough to get to know boss babe Mawar Yulia. She's the founder of Bumi Collective (Bumi meaning Earth in Indonesian) as well as one of the most reputable surf shops in Indonesia. Getting to see her passion behind all she does is truly inspiring so I had to stop her for a few questions.
1. What inspired you to start BUMI?
I have a surfshop called White Monkey Surfshop, it’s located in one of the best surf areas in Bali... the Bukit. We started making surfboards and then I had the idea to design and make bikinis for all the girls coming by the shop. I also wanted to teach more about Indonesia through the brand. A lot of people think of Indonesia and just think of Bali or a few other places but our country is made up of over 17,000 islands!! I want to inspire people to throw on their favorite bikini and explore more!
2. You’re from Sumbawa in Indonesia. What was it like growing up there?
Sumbawa is a raw island where we don’t have much in ways of the modern world. It’s a simple way of living, my mom had a famous restaurant for surfers on the beach at Lakey Peak, where I got to meet people from all over the world, who came to visit for the perfect waves. We would spend our time farming, fishing and making food. Free time was for surfing, which we learned from the visitors. What Sumbawa lacks in modern things, it makes up with it’s natural beauty. Beaches, mountains, jungle, waterfalls and wild animals are everywhere, still very untouched by mankind.
( ex : Mata jitu waterfall, Agal water fall ) and beach ( such a kertasari beach, gili bedil,Rantung beach , and many more) .
3. Can you give us a can’t miss destination in Indonesia?
There is so much to see and do in Indonesia, that it takes years and many trips to see all of its natural wonders. There is something for everyone, if you like busy places like Bali or other popular destinations it’s there, but if you want to get lost and away from everyone and everything, it’s also there...
4. What sets your bikinis apart from other bikini brands?
Our concept is to embrace the Indonesian culture, naming all of our different styles after islands that are well known and others that are still a mystery. I want to teach and inspire girls to travel and see as much of indonesia as they can.. and of course get a good tan while they are at it.
5. What’s the best piece of island advice you could give someone?
Island culture is much smaller than living in a big city, so always be aware that it’s smaller than you think. Always Respect , be friendly and a smile goes a long way....
6. What does protecting the ocean mean to you?
The ocean gives Indonesia life, its where we play, but its also where we get food and it’s the most popular way to travel. It’s a country with over 17,000 islands, so we have no choice but to love, protect and don’t forget to enjoy the ocean...
7. What is your favorite quote?
“Quit you whinning, the Sun is shinning”
"A magic board can change your life, and a magic wife will fix your life." A quote I came up with while building White Monkey Surf Shop.
Check out her Instagram to follow her adventures and if you're ever in Bali be sure to stop by the shop for a bikini and to say hi!.
